changing GL behaviour

Hello, I'm prototyping a site for my wife's school. This is how I would like GL to behave. I would like to have two different groups of users: teachers and the others. I would like to have a section which is only visible to teachers so they can discuss things not ment to be seen by students or parents. I would like to have only stories submitted by teachers to show up in the main window, stories submitted by others should only show up in the respective sections. Can I setup this with GL as installed? Or maybe I do need some plugin(s), if so, wich one? Hope you can point me in the right direction. Thanks, Eric

You should be able to do this by using Geeklog's permission system - no plugins or other addons needed. bye, Dirk

It's actually pretty easy. Go inside your admin control panel. Under the "Admins Only" block, access the link "Groups". This will bring up "Group Manager". Then, just make a new group for the teachers and give them whatever privileges you want. Then go back under the "Admins Only" block and access the link "Users". This will bring up the User Manager. You can either add each teacher individually or do a batch load. For each teacher assign them to the new group you just created. Also assign them to "All Users" and "Logged-in Users" if you want them to see what students, parents, and the general public submit. When a teacher wants to submit something for other teachers eyes only, they need to designate the Teacher's Group under Access Rights and uncheck the block for Members and Anonymous.

You should also look into setting the topic permissions accordingly, i.e. such that only the group which should have access to a topic can see it. It's a bit clumsy to explain but if you know how file permissions work on a Unix system, you'll see the similarities immediately: Each story has an owner (the person who posted it), a group (which the owner and the readers belong to) and a section for setting who else (any other logged-in users, anonymous users) should have access. bye, Dirk
