why no forum for a web blog site?

i just came across this site and love it already and plan on setting up a site using it asap. first question: where is a real forum to discuss this on here? question two: i have a MySQL database that is already running to forums, although i really no nothing at all about MySQL. i want to to know what do i have to do to set up a site with geeklog running off the same database. i had someone set up the 2 boards for me, but i want to start trying to do this myself. if i just try to set it up using the installer file, will it over write my existing database or will it simple create a section for it to work and leave my existing "required" info as it is. i am afraid to set it up and erase my existing database.

In the Geeklog config.php configuration file, you can set a prefix for all the tables used by Geeklog. It defaults to 'gl_', but you can choose anything you want there. I'm running three Geeklog sites off of one database that way.

There's only one catch: The table for the static pages plugin (which comes bundled with Geeklog) does not use that prefix. If your database already contains a table named 'staticpage' you need to be careful. Otherwise, that shouldn't be a problem (and I keep nagging Tony to fix this for the next release ;-)

bye, Dirk

MySQL is just the database engine. You can create multiple individual databases for your applications. By default Geeklog will create a database in MySQL called "geeklog" but you can specify the database name in the config.php file. Within the database, Geeklog install.php will create tables for the data. The prefix to the tables are by default gl_ . I run several installs of Geeklog for testing but always config the different installs to use different databases. This way, I don't have to worry about the table names - the databases are completly seperate. You can also backup and restore each database as individuals files easily. Cheers, Blaine

Correction...Geeklog never creates the database for you (maybe it should). It expects the database to exist prior to running the install script.
The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.

yeah .. i can think of a few options with this also .. a) create new database b) drop old database and create new database (gulp) in addition, i'd like to see the install script moved to \public_html\admin
