I'm sure this is a dumb question, but where is the code that takes care of the default blocks that are included with gl (Topics, What's New, etc.)?

COM_showBlock (not COM_showBlockS) in lib-common.php.

I guess I should have been a little more specific.

I'm trying to find the actual implementation for the content of those blocks. I'm trying to get my site to pass validation and in order to do that I need to fix some <br>'s that I believe are in that code.

It's all in lib-common.php. Did you try searching for the functions called by COM_showBlock?
