Are there any submissions under your admin menu? Maybe you have config.php setup to have them approved first.

Also, the registration email often ends up being marked as spam, so have your users check their spam folders. You may want to switch to using SMTP, which usually helps a bit if you have that problem. See the FAQ: Configuring email
