MySQL error when backing up

I just upgraded to 1.4.1 (from 1.3.11) and I can't back up my DB... this is the error.log:
Lost connection to MySQL server during query. SQL in question: UPDATE gl_vars SET value = value + 1 WHERE name = 'totalhits'

This means that your MySQL server died in the middle of that SQL request.
This has nothing to do with Geeklog. Talk to your hosting service.
