Hello,
When I change themes in preferences, do I also need to change the config file default theme to the same theme name?

Depends on what you intent to do. Changing the theme in the profile will only change it for the current user, i.e. for you. If you want to change it for all users (including anonymous visitors), you'll have to make the change in config.php.
