data/mailer

What are the files in data/mailer used for? Apparently something gave access to sendmail, and the mailer folder was being exploited by someone to send spam and so my hosting company suspended my account. They turned off all permissions to the folder and restored my account. The Geeklog site can still send email, though, so I'm wondering what function that folder actually has. I'm using version 1.3.11.

None of my geeklog installs have that directory.
