I would like to learn how to turn off all references to new user registration.

Search the config.php file for "disable_new_user_registration"...
I think it's new in Geeklog 1.4 which I assume you're running... On older versions I guess you have to edit the theme template files but upgrading to 1.4 might be a good idea under all circumstances...
