Default topic when logging in

On my family web site, I have two main topics. 1) Russell Family & 2) Stensland Family
What would be the easiest way to allow users to select which stories they see by default when they login? For example, if a user is a member of the Russell family, I would like GL to automatically go to index.php?topic=Russell when the user logs in, instead of just index.php.
FWIW, I think this would make a nice addition to the account preferences, allowing users to select which topic they'd like to load on login.
