OK, so I tried to do an upgrade after I saw my blog had been overrun by spam comments. I saved both blog directories onto my computer as backup and went for an upgrade.

It didn't work and so I'm pondering just doing a clean install and then creating new stories and copying and pasting the entries. However, I have no idea how to locate the entries in the stuff I backed up. I can't find any of the articles inside these folders.

I'm not very good with code, so please forgive me-

the stories are held in the database, not in the folders. If you have a database backup, you can easily run the sql from that backup that restores the stories to restore them into your new database.

If however you have thrown away your database, you have lost all your content.
