1.4 login problem

I've just upgraded from 1.3.11 to 1.4. If I log in as a admin everything looks normal. However, when I log in a normal user it doesn't seem to actually log in. I'm not able to get into members only areas. Has anyone else seen this?
FYI - the password validation is working correctly. Wrong password shows error. Right password acts like it logged in. I've also noticed that when I'm an admin and I logout I continue to show in the who's online box (gus).
Any ideas?

Here's some more info...
I discovered after I cleared cookies I couldn't log in at all. I changed $_CONF['cookiedomain'] = "kylecrothers.com" and was then able to log in again (during the upgrade to 1.4 this var was changed by me).
I then tried to log in as three different users - admin, myself, and a ordinary user. As admin and myself everything looks completely normal. As the ordinary user I don't show up in the "who's online" but I am logged in and can see my prefs.
I then logged in as myself and took away all of my rights to see what happened. Nothing. Belonging to only "all users" and "logged-in users" I showed up in the whos online as before.
It seems that two users who have the same rights show up differently. One shows in "whos onlilne" and the other doesn't.
How is this possible? Ideas?
