Import existing SQL DB?

Hi all,

This is sort of related to installation. I installed everything fine when I switched from NucleusCMS to Geeklog. I saved the SQL DB on my Desktop from Nucleus and would like to import all of those entries under NucleusCMS into Geeklog. Is that possible?

I've tried to mess around with CPanel and phpMyAdmin but have been unsuccessful in my attempts. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

There have been a few questions on importing existing blogs but there is no standard for importing nor exporting like making a CSV-file. It would be a great feature but the only solution is to paste and copy or write a special import script.

Darn. I was hoping it wouldn't resort to copy/pasting. Oh well - I'd definitely like to see that feature of importing/exporting, though! Thanks for the reply!

A generic import filter is impossible, though, since every CMS stores its data in a different format.

It would be possible to provide some sort of "import framework", but you would still need to write an import module of sorts to import data from a previously unsupported system.

That sounds like an interesting project, actually. I wonder if some of our more experienced users wouldn't like to pick this up. We certainly get a lot of those "how do I import my stories/users/whatever from system X?" questions ...

bye, Dirk

Yes, any sort of help on importing would be good. You know what would the mail programme Thunderbird be worth if it didn`t have an import filter from Outlook? An easy path to switch over to Geeklog is essential.

One would have to think about the blog programmes to be supported though. And of course a podcast plugin would be - wow! Mr. Green

It must be possible to convert the Nucleus data to Geeklog data if you know your way around with text editors with macro options like UltraEdit, and perhaps a relational database like Filemaker.

Make some demo content in Geeklog, download the database as CSV and compare it with the same demo content in Nucleus, also downloaded as CSV. Than compare it with the SQL file from the Geeklog install script, so that you know how the new data has to look like.

If you've found out how, convert the old content (which might take some time and effort..) to a SQL file and import it with PHPMyAdmin.

I did the same with importing a few hondred topicID's and names, and a few thousand users, so it is possible.I don't know if it will work with comments etc, but with articles and users: yes, you can, if you want to.
