your table errors and your path errors are NOT related. they are caused by different issues. one fix for a path issue will have no effect on table errors, and vica versa.
You need to read thru this thread again keeping that in mind. Just step by step--the learning curve may seem steep, but it'll be worth it.

Do you have access to your database? empty it of all data and tables (assuming this is a fresh install an no data has accumulated), then start again first checking your paths according to the above advice.

there is nothing more or hidden going on here than path issues and the attempt to install over existing database tables--AFAICS.

I have already re-read this thread three times, thank you. all paths are per advice given me on this thread.

i am apparently ahead of you. i tried to access myphpadmin, only to find out my server does not allow me access yet, so i wrote them. remember, i had said something about deleting those files already? if you read this thread, you would know that.

i have other programs running on the same database, so i hope i can delete tables selectively when my server does allow me in.

of you enter the key word 1050 in the SEARCH THIS FORUM, you will find some interesting posts.

SUCCESS AT LAST! And, FYI, it was NOT from any of the advice I found here. maybe you have something to learn from my experience and the experience of several others who never got a real answer to their 1050 issues.

For some weird reason, the LAYOUT dir had PERMISSIONS DENIED. and FYI, i DID NOT set it at this. The error message was fixed after i went into the LAYOUT dir after resetting the permissions. i am not sure if i got them right. i put it on rwx-rw-r.

and, please, do not blame me for the false chmod in that dir. i never touched any of the chmoding, and least of all to deny permission. if you read through my posts, you will see that i mentioned the permission issue. no one here figured it out. this is buggy IMO, and you need to figure out how to simplifiy and avoid this mishap. i had to go into myphpadmin about five times to continually delete or flush the gl tables. a real pain in the ass. why your program set a chmod with permissions denied in the LAYOUT dir is beyond me.

so, check it out
http://www.global-villages.info/geeklog/

you need to figure out why Dragonfly installs in a few minutes, but why some of us have to go through hell to get this installed. then, having to delete tables 100s of times in the troubleshooting part.

the software doesn't set permissions on your server. your server is responsible for that.

go use some other software if you cant appreciate the effort spent on you.

Who is this anonymous person speaking for Geeklogs?

what i posted here did suggest PERMISSION DENIED. and, i did NOT blame the dir issues on you -- but did ask two or three times if it could be a permissions/chmod issue. apparently it is you who did not appreciate the effort i spent to inform you. a case of projection on your part?

i am here to inform just as much as you are. so, what makes you so special, mr. tec?

i said twice at the very beginning i thought the path errors (that i clearly posted) was an issue of permissions and i supplied the paths that now, looking back. proved it. i deleted and reloaded the entire LAYOUT dir, using FILEZILLA again, it seemed to correct further issues with this dir and now all the pictures are working.

FYI - added to my personal virtual ignore list.
People try to help you on, and the only thing you do is rant at the end.

Just a recap:

Yes, you had wrong paths from the beginning ... pointed out and corrected by others.

Yes, you edited your config.php and forget a quote ... pointed out and corrected by others.

Yes, your table was already there and best advice is to drop for newbies ... pointed out by others.

Yes, you didn´t follow the documentation in order to adapt all the filepermissions accordingly ... resulting in your last effort. But hey if the error says permission denied and you need someone to hold your hand to advice to read the documentation and confirm your webservers daemon needs access to the layout dir ... wel, yeah.

So yes, you indeed figured it all out by yourself ... Mr. Green

Keeping it around would allow malicious users the ability to destroy your current install, take over your site, or retrieve sensitive information.

It took a big man to admit that! (I guess not so, given you posted another insult after you claimed you were putting me on your IGNORE list, then openly admitted that you tried to hack my site. Not very cool or fair.)

You left out one thing though.

I immediately followed every instruction given this board after I read it. I even documented that I did, and clearly documented the results after doing so -- so there would be no confusion. though, i was accused of not doing things, that I had.

The LAYOUT directory set itself to PERMISSIONS DENIED somehow -- so it ain't my fault or your fault. is that clear yet? i see where others also had issues with this particular dir. no one touched it. this could only have happened after installation as far as i can tell.

the only chmod instructions were

chmod -R 775 logs/
chmod -R 775 public_html/backend/
chmod -R 775 public_html/images/articles
chmod -R 775 public_html/images/userphotos

and i followed those closely before i even attempted installing -- but as for going through the other 5000+ files, i did not cull through every one, no. so to accuse me of not following the chmod documentation provided is a little bit of an exaggeration.

thank you Knuff. You are right, but, as i posted in a NEW TOPIC, there are still problems, and i cannot get the site to acknowledge me as an administrator. so, to delete the installation would be premature.

this is only a trial site, and is not its final location. I am running two other CMS programs i set up at the site, fusion and dragonfly. i found geeklog's search feature to be better for what i am attempting to do. i do not want to delete my current CMS and replace it with Geeklog until i know i can run and set it up it correctly.

I just gave your user glovalvuser root access on your site, so you can at least change the password of admin and moderator before anyone less nice starts to play around with your site.

Must be because the sun is shining outside that I am so nice praying it will work

Ok, i got in now. i did not have this problem with fusion or dragonfly -- but they set up a admin backdoor link that must carry all the info with it. they automatically gave me admin status as the owner of the database designated. please, tell me how you hacked my site, preferably in a private letter. because, i have to reproduce the installation of this and i do not want to take three days doing it. hopefully i can get it down to 10 minutes! i have already lost much sleep the last week on these CMS programs.

now, well come on, knuff, be honest! first you threaten to IGNORE me, then you openly suggest you can hack my site... and make fun of me for not deleting the Install dir... and then you do hack my site without my permission?

ok... i think i got it. this had a default admin and moderator with a stock password. well, nowhere had i read that piece of info.

just wanted to add that your "1050" database error has/had absolutely nothing to do with directory permissions. So what ever you were tinkering with that made it all work--congratulations!

Sorry to hear you had such an ordeal with this install. My first one took about 2 days. I have it down now to about 1 minute. I know my paths; I know my directories to chmod (as listed in docs); I know "first things first" stuff after the install, like deleting the install dir, changing default passwords, etc.

One of the reasons Geeklog installs the way it does, rather than just upload, cliick, and your done, is due to it's dedication to security as well as it's greater functionality within that secure framework as compared to many other CMS solutions.

Don't let this slow install discourage you--this CMS is da bomb!

[an auto space would be nice here]

i know 1050 had nothing to do with permissions. i knew we were having multiple issues and i was just trying to work patiently one at a time with it. the 1050 was all about needing to flush the tables out --though at first i thought it might be a cache issue, since i was not so familiar with tables yet. my server just setup myphpadmin. permissions has to do with access to dirs. i know that much. i have done some chmoding over my 10 years on the internet. mostly older CGI programs. the answer is in all the small details, like quotes. oh, my failing eyes!!! and it sure was stupid how that dumb LAYOUT dir suddenly decided to lock everyone out!!! it is always something off the wall gonna hit you with all the different issues from different places.

i have to reproduce this, and install it in another dir. though, i am toying with figuring out how to just MOVE the dir, then rewrite paths.

i ran the demo, and compared it closely with dragonfly and fusion. for what i need to do, it has it. but this install is a *censored*, and i am tired after doing to other CMS setups!

i hear you about the security. but, this new dragonfly seems very secure. it had me delete the install file too. it is really good, but... the layout and search on geeklog is just a bit better for what i have to do. so, i am determined. i just hope after all this, that the maniplation and admin panel is easy to follow as i am hoping.

thanks for encouragement!

There is no hacking involved in your case. You invited everyone to check out your site, and your first post was very friendly inviting me to log in as admin.

Mr. Green sure, good fun for someone stating in three different threads that geeklog is too difficult, no-one helps him and he figured it out all by himself after people really tried to help.

Well, stupid me. Apparently I just did not understand that first page to be any more than a default copy of the Geeklog home page -- and i thought i had to immediately go sign up when i could not log in as my dbname and password -- as i had in other CMS i setup. i really did screw up on that step. add dyslexia and bad eyes, lack of sleep, and it is a miracle i do this at all.

Nonetheless, no matter how good it makes you feel that someone is not as computer savvy as yourself, it would have been more polite to first ask permission before you break into someone else's site. You know for a fact that the intro page was not an invitation to you. and, you know, that it would have been far better for me to have done it properly myself -- if not just for the respect of learning.

Why would it surprise you that I was a littel stunned that on a computer nerd board such as this, that few could follow this thread properly, and no one could acknowledge something as simple as chmoding issues... when I am so inexperienced in comparison.

if you are using me as a symbol to make yourself feel superior, you are sure aiming too low. i am a novice whose experience does not go beyond tweaking a few cgi programs for my own use. I possess no special abilities in this area -- so that is why i am here -- and that is where my comments stemmed from. so, let us not waste so much message board space on so much ego-tripping, and just get to the facts with a few less words.

Sandi,

You are arrogant, obnoxious and ignorant. I personally find some of the answers here to be occasionally short and some times not very helpful but typically if you follow the documention and installation instructions you can make geeklog work in only a couple of minutes. It's obvious that you clearly do not read anything and want someone to do all the work for you.

Sorry ,just wanted to cover all the bases.

P.S. Sorry, had to add one more thing...

If you don't log in and change the default passwords at the time of installation and someone else logs in using the default password then I can't see how you can accuse them of hacking.

It is clearly an example of your inability to follow simple directions.
