Question on registering users

When a user registers to my site it says a pasword has been emailed and the system never emails the pasword and when a user tires to email an article from the site the system never emails the article. Any idea how to fix this problem. I think it is just a simple line that I may not have fixed to tell it to use my smtp servers. any help?
