leftblocks.thtml not being parsed?

I'm running gl 1.3.11 and I was making some theme mods and noticed that leftblocks.thtml does not actually get parsed. geeklog_blocks in the header.thtml contains the actual left_blocks. How can I make leftblocks.thtml handle the left blocks?
