Using file:// and notes:// in links.php

Hi,
on our Intranet-site, we have links to files (file://server/folder/file.ext) and notes databases (notes://server/folder/database.nsf). While I can insert those files into stories (after changing the allowed protocols in config.php), I cannot use them in links.php. IE is producing an error there.
I do not get any errors reflected in the serverlog however.
Neither apache nor geeklog.
what can be done to make those links work?
thanks

submit.php checks that links start with http: and doesn't allow any other sort of link. admin/link.php, on the other hand, doesn't seem to do any checks.
Somewhat inconsistence, methinks ...
