Does anyone know if any of the available Forum plugins/wrappers are able to replace the normal story comments with a Forum thread? In other words when you post a story a thread is automatically created in the Forum for discussion of the article.

This would make for an excellent interface between the two -but I haven't seen any suggestion that such functionality is available.

Any suggestions/comments?

Gee - someone just posted the exact same question on my site. Spend a few min and you will see that I am active on both site

There is no current mod to do this. The comment engine is tightly integrated with the GL Article Feature since that was the original pupose of Geekog.

You can disable comments and add a link to the forum topic but thats still a few steps. You would probally want to have an option where comments are disabled, a forum topic created and link added automatically I guess

GL 1.3.10 will have a new feature called autolinks to save having to enter the full url - you would just enter discuss here and that would be replaced with a link to forum topic 1020 with a link name called "discuss here"

Thats still requires you to create the topic first and recall the topic id that is the URL. This one is topic id 41227.

I appreciate you are active in both places. Posting on your site meant I was confident I'd catch your attention specifically in relation to your plug-in. Posting at GL here meant I'd hopefully get a broader range of responses relating to other wrappers and plugins etc particularly as I've not yet determined which forum to implement.

I certainly didn't want to offend - but then I doubt you want people posting exclusively here in relation to your Forum plug-in?!

I suspected as much, although I'm somewhat surprised more folks aren't after something like this now that integrated forums are a common thing in GL.

Sure - and therein lies the problem in that this is probably too involved for occasional contributors.

Absolutely.

I'm curious whether the article publication system has any hooks where such actions could be added?

Autolinks definitely sounds like a great feature - but still in order for to achieve seamless integration between story discussions and the forums there needs to be some magic going on.

This strikes me as a really important feature as the current comments system is well something of a bolt on and doesn't really engender the sorts of discussion that a full blown forum system facilitates IMHO.

Thanks for the prompt feedback.

This will be a feature I would like to have too. After running a community site for a while, I have learnt that having both comments and forums spread people's attention and elevate confusion and ended up loosing visitors because they don't know where is the best way to go.

Leading people to the forum from the article is a great way to guide the visitors on the site tour.

I wrote a quick hack to do this and then promptly overwrote it. I'll try again today or over the weekend.

I'm pretty sure Dirk was soliciting feedback on how best to do this in an upcoming version. Dont have the link to hand though sorry.

Well, I also discussed this with Dirk on the German forum and thought it was a very good idea. One would have admins, various rights etc.

This was actually BEFORE I discovered what a "native" blog is and that comments are that linked to the life style / Zeitgeist of blogging.

It is true that both comments and forum plugin are possibly irritating but this is a style decission. A blog needs comments and a newsportal needs a forum plugin. Just my Just my two cents
