No matter how I try to link them in the topics control screen, they will NOT appear

I have them linked now as: http://macmentor.org/switch/images/icons/HAL.gif (using only one icon till I get it all figured out and make new icons)

I have tried: images/icons/HAL.gif, /images/icons/HAL.gif...

is there some secret to this?

Try
/images/topics/hal.gif

Of course you'll have to put hal.gif in
/path/to/public_html/images/topics/

Nope, tried that still no go. renamed it moved it to another dir, changed the link url all kinds of ways. Even changed the name incase the upper case was the problem - help.

/images/topics/hal.gif is what it says now...

it's there even

It should be relative to Geeklog's index.php. Since you seem to be running Geeklog from a subdirectory called "switch", you'd have to include that in the path:

/switch/images/topics/hal.gif

I just took another look at your site. The page souce say the topic icon should be here:
