How to make featured story span 2 columns

I know I've seen the answer somewhere, but I can't seem to find it right now. Must now be getting the search terms just right.
I want to make the featured story span two columns, i.e. trespass into the right column.
I know it's possible, but where can I find information on how to do it?

I haven't done it, but I'd imagine if you're using a table based theme adding colspan="2" in the featuredstorytext.thtml.
Then again, I'm not 100% certain.
