How to tell GL version. I'm thinking I might simply upgrade since I already need to fix whitespace problem. Please advise how to tell the version I'm already using?

Your whitespace problem certainly has nothing to do with the Geeklog version you're using, so upgrading won't help.

Geeklog doesn't store the version anywhere. There is only a constant set in config.php:

define('VERSION', '1.3.9sr1');

You should also see the version number in the "Command and Control" section ("Submissions" from the Admin block) as well as behind the "GL Version Test" entry (also in the Admin block).
