3 column layout to a 2 column layout

How can I accomplish this? I read the faq's but it really didnt enlighten me

I assume you are talking about CSS. or are you interested in the much more complicated DHTML solutions?

If CSS, the easiest way would be to nest your 3rd column within the 2nd column (float right). when the 3rd column/rightblocks are not called, the 2nd column will expand. viola! 3 columns into 2. You can see an example of this in my purplerose theme, which you can find here ,</shamelessPlug> but has been updated (read the comment).

If you're just talking about not using the rightblocks on any page including the index page, look for COM_siteFooter('true'); and change to COM_siteFooter() in the appropriate php file, eg, index.php. but i think you already knew that.

You may just try not having any blocks defined as being on the right - hense only 2 columns.

and if I wanted to change a 2 column layout to three columns, I would just add the {right_blocks} to the footer?

No.... right_blocks is in the header.thtml file. You should probably read this and a bit of this but neither are completely simple introductions (which implies that someone should write one I guess...).
