Can't read stories after server upgrade

After my host upgraded his server, I can't read stories. Every other page works fine, but when I try to read a story, it won't let me connect. It always sends me back to the main page. Has anyone seen this before?

sooner or later the Register_globals issue is going to be a realy BIG problem as more and more servers turn them off

I read some workaround that is done by inserting a short function to make software work also with r_g=OFF.

I am afraid that I am not able to tell which of them wokrs without problems.

The question in the end is if its worth changing the code of 1.3x. As the timeline for v2 is quite uncertain, it might be worth considering.
