There are two questions here:

1. I can create new feeds OK with different files other than the default geeklog.rdf

However in the drop down list of topics to add to the feedall the topics I have created are not present. At this point it is only All topics or General News plus Links and Events. Is there a way to have other topics in the list so that feeds can be content specific?

2. Only stories that are made available to anonymous users are written to the RDF / RSS files. Is there a way to have stories that are available to logged in users only and even to specific groups, be written to feed files. This would be useful say for a member site that has different content access for different user groups. Only the relevant groups would get access to the feeds. A news reader could be used that can access password protected feeds.

Assigning specific topics to specific feeds would also need to be available.

Noel

The problem is that the feeds are stored as files. Therefore, they would be accessible by anyone - even for topics that are supposed to be available for registered users only. So that's why Geeklog currently only allows topics and stories to go into feeds if they can be seen by anonymous users.

Thanks Dirk,

I see your point. Now that additional files can be created with feed content, the URLs of all feeds wouldn't need to be made available to all users.

Regarding my first question, are newly created topics supposed to be in the dropdown list as an available source of content for a feed?

That's a concept called "security by obscurity" and isn't exactly what we have in mind when we talk about security in Geeklog ...

For a proper solution, feeds for non-public topics would need to be created dynamically. Which in turn creates the problem of securely identifying the user requesting the feed. I don't see an easy solution for this, though.

Yes, if they can be seen by anonymous users.

I agree it's not a good solution. I am just looking for a good notification system that doesn't rely on email and updated RSS feeds seem to be an effective way to do that. I do have the emailgeeklogstories working.

OK I just made some the topics Anonymous and they are in the list.

Thanks for help.
