I posted this earlier in a differnet section but here is it again: I created an SMS system for my site at teamates.screentoons.com. It is still in it's testing phases and there are limitations.

The concept is to be able to provide a free SMS service for users that promotes the name of Screentoons as a tradeoff for the service. The costs for the administrater is in pennies and a worthy advertising method.

At the moment replying to the SMS does not go to the individual sender as of yet and so is not exactly private. I am working on a system that will give each subscriber a unique id# so when the reply goes to the server it will know where to direct it. This is not as easy as it sounds by the way.

Will keep you posted on the latest developments as it evolves. How many would find such a system useful?

I know SMS isn't used much in the states because of the expence and the keypad but think of the possibilities of texting someone from your computer immediatly where ever they are. If this can be offered to your geeklog members you can expand your communities communication potential.

How does this sistem work? I mean, someone has to pay for sending the message.
Could you give us more details?

I pay for the service myself but it doesn't cost much. This is because I have configered with an international server system that allows me to buy bulk credits at the cheaper european prices. So for me to provide this service for free to others is a cheap form of advertising for myself and promoting the SCREENTOONS brand identity.

Unfortunately, this runs through a virtual "phone number" that is identified as my server. This makes it difficult to route replys to the sender as the they end up being sent to me instead and there is no way to know who the initial sender was to reroute it.

Working on this is the more complicated part but may be done with an array system that creates a temporary flag for each user that gets flushed after a few hours. This allows a small window for a reply to the message.

Why not forward the reply to a users private message handle? Assuming you had the glMessenger plugin. That way it could be retrieved at any time. I think that would be a cool feature.
