I installed the google webservice package. Signed up with Google, got an ID to use, put that in devkey.php and tried a search.
All I ever get is "Search error, please try again".
I noticed the package isn't exactly brand new. Has anything changed on the Google side?
Any fixes available to get Google search working?

Hey, this is weird. Checked PHP version, it's 4.3.4, so that should not be the problem. So I re-activated the block and tried a search. Presto, works like a charm.
Maybe it takes Google some time to actually set up the account? Strange ...
