If I understand correctly, the only way for the # of views for a story to be updated is when someone clicks "read more".

Alternatively, it is updated when it's somehow shown as a single article (for example, when someone searches for it in the archive).

Then how come I have the newest article in my site, which is therefore the first in the main page, already showing a certain number of views when it doesn't have "read more" (I only used the intro text)?

You already answered it yourself: People could have accessed the article from the search results.

Also, clicking on the link from the Admin's list of stories (not the edit link, but the story title) will count as a hit.

Yea, but the thing is I am the only admin and I haven't clicked the article itself.
Also, since it's so new, I doubt that anyone has searched for it.

I've noticed that the count also increments if you edit the story. Could that be the case?

At this point, no, but it definitely would be a cool feature.
