new stories clobber old after upgrade to 1.3.8

here\'s the deal. i upgraded from 1.3.6 to 1.3.8 and now, when i create a new story, it saves it into the database with the same sid as the previous story clobbering it. every \"new\" story thereafter continues to use the same sid over and over again.
any bright ideas on fixing this?

well, i went through story.php and COM_makesid() and everything appeared to be in working order, so i tried again... and it works now.
damn gremlins.
