were default geeklog blocks meant to work differently than custom blocks?

like, i can't make the "what's new" or "events" block show up under specific sections like i can custom blocks.
moving blocks from the lib-common.php to the lib-custom.php is slow going. cut and paste doesn't work, i get a block inside a block that way.
just curious

The code was written differently. The Block Manager shows the gldefault blocks can be displayed on all or none of the pages. There's no choice to have these blocks appear under only a specific topic. If you want this effect, then you'll have to hack the code. You can also submit a feature request asking the developers to modify the code to allow this flexibility in one of the future releases.
You're getting a block inside a block because you have COM_startBlock and COM_endBlock in the code. You need to eliminate these from whatever block you're modifying into custom ones. Geeklog automatically slaps a block header and footer on custom blocks that's why it's showing up twice.
