Suddenly my hit counter is counting hundreds of hits every few seconds yet very few visitors on the site. Something is broken big time. Any ideas? I checked on with my hosting company and there definitely are not enough connections to the site for this to be real hits.

Skript kiddies, referrer spam, search engine bots running amok ...

A look at the site's webserver logfile should usually answer this.
