These are common errors, and to get rid of them you just need to read the docs properly.
Read the sections about making your backend and log files writeable.

I think one thing assumed is that the user knows that their web-server runs as a unix user, and it is that user who needs write access during the setup script. I would guess most of the folks working on this project have been playing with Apache, MySQL, and PHP for some time now, and take the knowledge of how the web-server and PHP and *nix work together for granted. But if some new user decides they want to use your product to set up a web page, goes out and buys RedHat 7.x, they have been sheilded from all of these concepts. If the *nix community ever wants to be accepted by mainstream masses, the installation scripts are going to go a long way to accomplish this, as well as resisting the temptation to flame the newbie. Are we looking to convert new users FROM Microsoft or TO microsoft?

I am a newbie to all these applications and while I can fudge it and get it to work, I am not geeky enough to actually understand what it all means. I am running MT, Gallery, and IkonBoard and they all work (somehow...) and would like to use Geeklog for my hubby's CounterStrike Clan site and later for a client community when I have qualified in my chosen field.
The "quick and dirty install" instructions just aren't clear enough for someone like me. I will be running them on Aletia's server. I would appreciate walkthrough assistance, or detailed instructions and hearing a prospective user slammed does not make asking for help an attractive prospect.
