There was a discussion about this a year or so ago and I think it came down to licensing issues.
Dirk would know more about this as I believe he usually deals with the FCKeditor upgrades …

If you do not need last features :
#6089 : The editor is now enabled on iOS 5 (iPad and iPhone).
#7354 : It is now possible to exit from blockquotes by using the Enter key on empty paragraphs.
#7931 : The mode event now carries the previous editor mode.
#6161 : New autoGrow_onStartup configuration option.
#8052 : autogrow is now available as an editor command.
#3457 : It is now possible to edit the contents of <textarea> elements through the dialog window.
#8242 : The "»" character is now added to the Special Character dialog window.
You can try
jQuery plugin[*1] .

By default CKfinder stores images in your public_html/images/ckfinder/userfiles/. Make sure those folders exist and are writable.
Maybe you will also need to create a _thumbs and a images folder under the userfiles folder.

CKEditor itself is fine, from a license point of view. There was no CKEditor add-on that allowed image uploads that had a compatible license, though, last time I looked at it. This may well have changed, I haven't checked ...

Ben,
I have no idea what you just did but it is working now... I am able to upload pictures via ckeditor. I'm glad on one hand but concerned how you might have been able to manipulate within my test directories?
