After testing optimization tools on a geeklog site, here are some things we can guide our thinking development or future versions (core and plugins):
- Combine external CSS [Score: 42/100]
- Combine external JavaScript [Score: 46/100]
- Minify CSS [Score: 31/100]
- Minify JavaScript [Score: 43/100]
- Specify image dimensions [Score: 19/100]
- Combine images into CSS sprites[Score: 33/100]
Not geeklog related?
- Parallelize downloads across hostnames [Score: 0/100]
Test made with geeklog 1.7.1

I'd like to see javascript moved to COM_siteFooter instead of COM_siteHeader

Add in a feature request with your ideas and stating the reasons behind the changes if it is not obvious.
Or better yet after discussing on the mailing list you could code a patch for your feature request
Cordiste, I will be updating the Professional theme fairly soon and I will add in image dimensions where required.

Have you seen the future? Paul Irish, Remy and many others...

I have used this template and techniques for every new site for the past 6 months.(A lot to learn from)
The css reset alone is amazing, making things we normally struggle to get looking nice across all browsers a snap.
Especially form elements that would normally look super ugly in IE look fantastic.
Example of some
forms recently finished[*3] .

Combine images into CSS sprites
The sprites are a very good idea to reduce http requests. Sprites for the login and flag icons.
