Spend 15 minutes at each website and I think you'll be able to make that decision for yourself.
I use them both.
Joomla is far more of an advanced CMS system.
Geeklog is a straight out of the box blogging tool.
The folks at gllabs.org have done some remarkable things with enhancing gl.
Joomla 1.5 is pretty impressive. I've been playing with it for the past few weeks.
You're up and running in 15 minutes in GL.
It will take you a few days to get through the learning curve of Joomla.

Best you search this forum for postings on Mambo, Wordpress, xoops, e107 and so on. You will find several opinions pros and cons.
Basically GL ist for people who like Linux style of control and Joomla has more emphasis on quick install, impressiv layouts and huge backend. It is a complete overkill for newbees who just want a homepage. I tried it years ago before GL had the editor included with some 5 friends with little computer knowledge. They all gave up.

Honestly, it depends upon what kind of site you aim to create. Blog site, Photo Gallery, Personal site, business site, single user/author, group site, multi-user blog site, etc. There are many different tools to create different type of sites. Don't let anyone tell you that system X is better or worse that system Y. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, it just depends upon which strengths and weaknesses are important to you for that given site.
Personally, I've found it valuable to become at least relatively familiar with the following (in no particular order :wink
Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla!, and since this
is a geeklog forum, Geeklog!

It's the other way around. Joomla! is a fork from Mambo. But yes, the OpenSourceCMS site itself is running on Mambo.
Thx!
