Hi Markus, I've just asked my programmer to develop a real tags plugin, a bit like the Ultimate Tag Warrior for WP, including RSS feeds for each tag and SEO friendly URL's....
He's awfully busy right now, but if we're patient there will be such a (premium?) plugin in a few months.
Of course it wll be possible to produce something from the search stats. You'll have to find some snippets from the GUS plugin to adapt to your needs.

What would such a "real tags plugin" do? I still don`t understand what a tag is.
When I post a link then I have a title, a URL, and a description. It seems to me that the word 'tag' is nothing but a modern word for description keyword. Those keywords aren`t better than my old fashioned 'description', is it? The difference is that they rather consist of nouns but that is not a real advantage. The geeklog search should find any word in the description.
And this one is great and makes sense because it is funny and most of all decorative.

You are right that such a plugin may take results from the stats. I read another example where the cloud just counted the words on one page to show what topic was up or even a cloud that was done manually.
Some German articles on that:

http://www.blogbar.de/archiv/2006/01/25/das-elend-der-tagcloud-in-der-blogcommunity/[*7]
--> What I simply meant originally was to go with that now silly seeming trend to have word clouds. Can`t your programmer do that faster and free? Count the words on a page / topic, make a cloud with those words and if you click a word you are being taken to the standard geeklog search.

There is a tag cloud plugin being written by Oliver Spiesshofer. I don't know what his progress has been lately. He was talking about it by in January.

Tags are useful to search content that isn't otherweise searchable. Images would come to mind and Flickr is probably a good example.
Tags can also help with texts / articles, as you can add (associated) keywords that are not part of the actual text.
And searching for tags instead of doing a full text search can ease the load, although that's mostly only a welcome side-effect.

Thanks, as you noticed I am a bit playful with this. Yes, I can imagine it to be helpful with pictures and indeed I noticed this with the pictures of LinuxTag in 2006.
So may the developers take all the time they need...
I have a feeling I will play around with a manual word cloud just for fun.

Hi
Is there currently any way to use xml (my own tag set instead of html) in a standard installation of Geeklog?
If not, how about a workaround: Any html tag that would let me set my alternate tag names as attributes?
If not, what is the time frame on that plugin...?
Thanks

As I mentioned before, I've just hired a programmer to make a 'tags' plugin with tagcloud etc. He will be ready in about a month.
Unfortunately for other GL'ers this plugin has to cooperate with the brands and products in the dealerlist plugin on my site, and will also produce a subdomain for each tag (the 500 brandnames, 900 dealers and about 10 categories in the dealerlist will produce a nice amount of content
).

FYI, Media Gallery already has tags for each media item. Alas, they're not clickable and there's no tag cloud. Therefore it's more of a proof of concept. Also, the upcoming version would finally have additional fields for each item (like author and genre), but I fear they too might not be clickable (which is needed if you, say, like the current item and want to get all items by the current author).
