Very interesting question, and surely worth to consider when we are looking at GL 2.0
Right now I do not consider GL 1.4 as web 2.0
The wiki entry on web 2.0 is pretty vague and point to a lot of directions, but when I look at GL 1.4 it is still pretty much old school CMS, and allthough the elements of web 2.0 are there, we do really miss in the GL 1.4 the key elements that would make it to web 2.0 standards.
Just two considerations why i think GL 1.4 is not yet Web 2.0
- It is still very hard to just plug-in the best services in a GL framework and make it all work seemlessly together. Web 2.0 is afterall about getting the best services and make them work all together (SOA).
- If the plugin is not designed or optimized for GL it will be hard to implement / integrate and will need specific GL adaptation. And as the word says, it needs to be a plugin, a more global API framework would surely assist to this. I know GL cannot be the driver for a global API framework, but this would be key.
I think GL 2 has all the parts to become really Web 2.0, the question is how long will it takes ?
And don´t get me wrong when I said GL 1.4 is old school CMS, it is still one of the best outthere and the major old school players like Microsoft and SAP just to name two are still "far" away from Web 2.0 (in the case of SAP it is only fully targeted in their new release coming in 2010)
So, very interesting question, looking forward to other thoughts.
Best Regards,
Boris
