Just curious, how many words do webmasters have in their SpamX personal blacklist. I've eliminated most comment spam but my forums still get spammed 5 to 10 times a day. I've also disabled trackbacks because of spam. I know this is not a lot compared to some sites but it is still a pain to deal with every day. I've got around 135 words or phrases in my blacklist.
Do you think sharing lists would help?
I'm thinking of possibly tinkering with the spamx plugin to make it smarter. I haven't looked at the code yet but what type of rules do you think that need to be added?
One rule I am thinking of is URL posting. Most posts by real users usually contain no more than one url. If 2 or more url's are detected then the message would be marked as spam.
Any other ideas?

SpamX has just been useless for me. Has anyone been able to hack comment.php so that we could add a verification field? We don't even need those fancy text-image verifiers. I know one blogger whose comment input has a field that asks a question like, "What color is an orange?"

I have a hard time believing this. Care to elaborate?
Sure, it's not perfect, but no system ever is.

SpamX doesn't filter out spam that includes links to new domain names. It was useful for removing spam comments once I added new domains to the filter but not preventing them in the first place. Rather than having 50 comments sitting around advertising "insects" all day, I just turned off anonymous comments altogether. (I just discovered your Bad Behavior filter and am glad it times out.)
I have gone to receiving 10-20 comments per week to receiving about 3 per week. I just now found that someone made a CAPTCHA for Geeklog this year; perhaps I should try it out.
I'm still wondering what customization can be done with the comment form. For instance, with anonymous comments it is kind of awkward not to have a name field.

No, I haven't. That sounds pretty cool, and it could suit my site well since I'm more likely to have comments link to less popular sites anyway.

Actually it works great. Is it possible to incorporate it into the comments and /profiles.php?uid=2 so that anything that is sent, is checked by this script. I've been getting more than usual as of lately. They finally figured out how to spam the users. Dirk, if you want to see what they sent...let me know.

I have found that by regularly checking spam-x log and checking all IPs using nslookup before adding them to the ban list has drastically reduced the spam comments I get on my two geeklog websites. Another advantage of the ban plugin is that it makes all logs easily accessable by Admin.
