As a regular reader of the geeklog based site
Groklaw[*1] , the comment trail can become very long, very quickly. Therefore I usually read comments in threaded mode to keep the page length reasonable. When a comment has a long list of sub-replies beneath it, leading to 6 or 7 layers deep, having to open each threaded comment is frustrating.
What I would like to see in Geeklog would be the ability to expand such sub-comments in nested mode, being able to swich between threaded and nested modes for the related sub-comments only rather than being applied to the complete comment thread.
Have a look at
Groklaw[*1] and you will see what I mean about the nesting depths.
Regards,
Morrie.

Vinny experimented with a "dynamic" comment mode a while ago, where some JavaScript code would expand only parts of a comment tree. We ran into compatibility issues with the various browsers, though, and had to take it back out again.
