So I am running the website for my College's rowing team
CSU Crew[*1] recently there was some troubles with the
gallery[*2] and this stupid phpinclude.ru crap so I decided to upgrade the whole site from 1.3.11 to 1.4 and using Media Gallery v1.2.1 instead of Gallery 1.5. Now I don't have access to the php.ini to turn of register_globals, how do I do this otherwise? Can I use .htacess? If so will I have to an a .htaccess to all folders on the site?
Second question is this, I have never done a upgrade before, only fresh installs. What are some suggestions from people as to making sure that all my beautiful little additions to my layout and plugins don't break?
Cheers,
deek

The
FAQ[*3] (which should really be updated to include 1.4.0 ...) lists a statement to turn register_globals on via .htaccess. If you're allowed to use that, it should also work to turn it off.

Ok upgraded to 1.4 and its working fine. I put the php_flag register_globals off in the .htaccess file in my /path/to/geeklog/public_html directory. How can I check that it is in fact off?

Use the file admin/install/info.php that came with Geeklog and search for "register_globals". Or create a new file that contains only
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
which does the same thing.
