A useful Mysql script[*1] was released by Tony Bibbs in 2002, which used a cronjob to make smart daily, weekly and monthly backups.
This does not work with a newer Debian-sarge server due to errors in sql that are probably due to the version of MySQL used (4.x). Can anyone help rectify this, it seems a very good strategy for backing up the database compared to a daily dump.
Thanks,
Ajay

I am also looking for intelligent back up solutions especially for multiple webspaces. My customers have no idea about backing up.
Have you tried this: http://www.geeklog.net/filemgmt/singlefile.php?lid=465
I also tried this one: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpmybackup It is very good as it sends the MySql backup by email or ftp. So I can install it on a customer's webspace and back up automatically.
Unfortunately it doesn`t compress yet.

FWIW, it's working just fine here on geeklog.net and on another site of mine, both with some version of MySQL 4.
Can you be more specific about what exactly isn't working? After all, it's only calling mysqldump ...
bye, Dirk
