I couldn't find anything on this so if its been done point me in the right direction.
If I can find some time I'll try to do this myself.
I wouild like the option as admin to specify that a link open a new page. Maybe a checkbox or something.
Any ideas or takers? Might be a pretty easy hack.

Nope, guess I wasn't wearing the right color of shirt when I did my search. Or I was searching on the wrong words. And that's hogwash about novice users. Just because Dirk doesn't like them doesn't mean that everyone should never use them. Besides what I have is links that open up an audio file in either WMA or RM or other audio format. They aren't designed to be open in the same window.
Go to my site
us-firefighters.com and try some of the Live Dispatch links and you'll see what I mean.

I appreciate Dirk's concern over confusing users with a new window that covers the previous window. The following code will open a new window to whatever dimensions you choose.
Make a backup of your linkdetails.thtml then insert the contents with the code below. (Works in browsers I have tested buts that's only a couple)
Put it between your a and close a tags
and replace the $ with { as geeklog strips them out when I put into this post.
===code===
"$link_url$" onclick="window.open(this.href, 'popupwindow', 'width=800,height=600,scrollbars,resizable'); return false;">$link_name$
===code===

By the way, you should be able to use the CODE button and it not strip out the { is this what it shouild look like?
"{link_url}" onclick="window.open(this.href, 'popupwindow', 'width=800,height=600,scrollbars,resizable'); return false;">{link_name}

Maybe it would be an idea if the link manager showed the llink twice. One could be titled "opens in new window".

I think I get what you are saying. I just think that the admin should be able to make the decision on whether or not a link should open in a new window like a checkbox to indicate that the link should "Open New Window". It just means making it more versital.
As for me, most links I would leave it up to the user to decide, but some links like the ones that open some streaming audio it's just annoying. Most of the time though it should be left to the user as to whether he/she wants it to open in a new window. If one wanted to take it further they could give users an option in Preferences but that might be going to the extreme.
