thought that I would mention, before you all started in on me, that the link to the promised category index page will only show up if you actually have more than one category.
oh, and until the category management page is done, and rather than trying to add a quote just to get a new category in your db, you can add categories manually by adding rows to the gl_dailyquote_cat table in your database, but don't delete any if there are quotes already belonging to them or you'll have troubles.

Thanks for starting a new thread, and thanks for replying to the old one so that I'd get notified. I would have checked eventually, but now I get it before the weekend.

Well, I installed 1.0.3, and everything appears to be working alright except for the categories index page.
The Categories page is completely broken. It's waaaaaaay too wide and is in its present state totally useless.
See it in action at:

Any thoughts?
Thanks,

Holy Moly! you are right when you say its broken... I've only tested it with about 20 categories.. I'll look at that right away and post the fix. It wont be difficult.
In the mean time, if you look at the code, you'll see a couple of different options for listing the categories. the other options are commented out. perhaps one of the other options will do you.
thanks for having so many categories. but seriously, that is a bug that wouldn't have been caught until someone went over 30 categories and I probably wont myself. so good job!
btw, jhackwith, I really like what you've done with it. diff text here and there; good styles; etc.

to this:
if ($i % $col === 0){

It wont be the same issue that is causing the problem. perhaps you can provide a bit more detail. a picture of your page may help--easier to track the problem if I can see the output.
off the top of my head though, I would suggest that your fix will be in the template files somewhere (not getting along with your theme): batchaddform.thtml; addformheader.thtml; addformfooter.thtml. You can test that theory by viewing the page using another theme. If it displays ok, then compare those theme's template files with your present theme's to find the problem.
hope that helps

seems to me this is probably a MAC / browser issue.
the overflow: scroll and/or overflow: auto styles may not be properly supported by either your browser or your browser on your OS.
try this: on line 23 of batchaddform.thtml, change "overflow: scroll;" to "overflow: auto;"
see what difference that makes.
also, on the same line, if auto didn't work by itself, add this: "width: 600px;" or the width of your choice.
hope some of that helps.. let me know and i'll revise my code if necessary

I've installed this version and it is mostly working fine for me. Congratulations.
I was unable to add some quotes to the database. When I used the add2 form, it gave me 5 errors which I traced to 5 similar quotes. So I tried adding them one by one using the add.php form. However, it keeps telling me that the quote already exists in the database. I've looked at the database through phpMyAdmin and they are not there. What is your code using to see if the quotes already exist or not. These quotes that I am trying to add are very similar. In fact, the first 10 or so words are exactly the same as other quotes. The only changes I have made is to add the title field and modify add.php and add2.php to be able to insert that field into the table.
Also, I had a look at some of the template files cause I wanted to make some changes to the layout and text. The templates use variables enclosed in curly brackets {}. Where are those variables being set? I mainly want to change the title saying "Quote of the day" as well as display my title as well. I noticed a commented out title line in one of the templates, but couldn't figure out where the variable was being populated from.
Cheers,
Vivek

You can change all of the text displayed by the plugin, including the title, in the language file located in [geeklogdir]/plugins/dailyquote/language/english.php.

yes yes, the language file is the first place to start.
now about those duplicate quotes: to ensure that quotes are not loaded twice, they have been indexed according to the first 32 characters, if i remember correctly--check your dailyquote_sql_install.php file located in the <geeklog>/plugins/dailyquote/sql/ directory.
Of course you may increase this number to accommodate your very similar quotations, however, your indexing and search time, not to mention your database size, will take a hit. If you have a substantial number of quotes, that hit will be substantial.
Try it out by using phpMyAdmin. You'll be editing the size of the index created on the "Quotes" UNIQUE KEY from 32 to some larger number. This is done on the structure tab (should be the default tab when opening up the table).
Let me know if that helps.

if you want the category management page (BETA) you can download the relevant pages at
summitpages.ca.
Only the relevant pages are included and are for testing if you wish. The page itself is fully functional, however, the ability to disable quotes according to category has yet to migrate to the display pages. Only category titles are affected as yet. No help for this one yet--you'll have to wait for the plugin version 1.0.4, but I wouldn't mind your comments.
be warned, it may mess up your lookup table--such is the nature of beta.

Hello,
We love this plugin which we have just installed on our GL site without a problem. We are mindful of the time and effort required to produce one of these things...so congratulations to the develper on a fantastic piece of work.
A question: Is there an easy way to edit an individual quotation? Sometimes we don't notice a typo straight away when moderating submissions and want to go back later and make changes to an individual quotation. We would love to see perhaps an "edit" link for admins incorporated with the quotation listings - that would be fantastic (or perhaps we are just noobs and have been missing something already there? )
We also saw mentioned here somewhere something about a quotation title field perhaps being incorporated. We'd love to be able to do too!!! (Don't want much, now do we? )
Thanks Jill

Hi Jill, I am very glad that you and whomever else you are speaking for like the plugin. I spent a couple of months on it one weekend.
The edit link you speak of will be in the next release. I keep forgetting.
in the mean time, if you notice one of your quotes is a bit off, take note of it and enter it into the search form on the manage page... it will come up and you can edit it from there.
as far as the title field goes... I am wavering. It seems to me that the category field should fill this role. It is do-able, but.. hmmmm.. I just don't know.
convince me.

Ah excellent...we can't wait to see the direct "edit" link in the next version. Much as we LOVE the plugin -- doing a search each time for an individual item can be a little cumbersome (especially if you're doing a lot of editing like we are... ok ok so we admit to making a lot of typos ).
Convince you that the title field is a useful thing? ...the pressure. Hmmm ok well we must admit to using the plugin not only to collect quotes but also various other items including poems, song lyrics, hints and tips, testimonials, jokes etc. It would be beneficial for our users to be able to identify what sort of item they are looking at...Is this a quote? a lyric? a testimonial? We thought that we could use the title field as a means of further identifying a listing...such as...Lyric: The Long and Winding Road...unless of course you can think of a better way of doing it

So you are categorizing the entries.. then further defining them using titles. Is that the idea? hmmm... I wonder how that is different from simply adding an already categorized item to another category.
for example, a poem belonging to the "milton" category as well as the "poem" category. this would allow your users to click on the "milton" category to see all items in that category, or to click on the "poem" category to see all the poems (not just by milton). A title field would be specific to the item and not clickable to anything else. Do you see what I mean? This is actually why a created the possibility of a single item belonging to multiple categories.
You almost had me convinced but then I remembered the categories.

By the way, machinari, I'm enjoying 1.0.3 very much. I especially like the block config options so I can turn on/off all the stuff. It's everything I've ever asked for. (Until I think of some more... ) Thanks.
I enjoy the other improvements, too. I've re-imported all my movie quotes with the source and date fields intact, and my custom hacks are now very few. I also like the code clean-up you've done. Having one place where a new quote/cache quote is retrieved makes it very much easier to poke around.
Now I'm off to check out the (beta) category management page, so I can offer something constructive on the feature I suggested.

This worked as well. I had to increase the value to 52.
I have now managed to import all my previous quotes to your database without any errors.
Now, I've been poking around the code so that it will support my use of titles. I have changed the db to add that one field as well as modified the add and add2.php so people can use titles. But I haven't succeeded in changing the templates to make it work just yet. I know I need to make a few changes in the functions.inc file in the functions used to retrieve the quote and the one used to display the centerblock, but it is doing weird thing when I made those changes. Hopefully, a bit more poking around will make this plugin exactly what I need.
Once again, thanks for all the work you put into creating the plugin. It is extremely useful.

Instead of doing all that with yet another field, try this:
change the centerblock.thtml file from:
<table border="0" align="center">
<tr>
<td width="1%">
<p>"{dispquote}"</p>
<p align="right"><em>{dispquoted}{source}</em>{sourcedate}</p>
<p style="text-align: right; font-size: 8pt;">{subm_by}{dispcontr}
{cat}{dispcat}</p>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
to this:
<table border="0" align="center">
<tr>
<td width="1%">
<h3>{source}</h3> <!-- this is used for title -->
<p>"{dispquote}"</p>
<p align="right"><em>{dispquoted}</em>{sourcedate}</p>
<p style="text-align: right; font-size: 8pt;">{subm_by}{dispcontr}
{cat}{dispcat}</p>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
just a thought... the source field would then be your title and appear above your quote.
but if you are intent on hitting the code, keep in mind that the quotes are selected in a number of places: functions.inc; index.php; search.php; manage.php; moderate.php. In all those places, the select statements are similar but not exact--your field will have to be represented in all those places. then the display involves setting the variables in the proper functions,, editing the template to reflect those variables... and so on. don't forget about the input--check it for nasty bits. etc.

OK. I've tried the category management pages and I'm pleased with the direction its going. I like the ability to create categories myself, and I have a few suggestions.
1) I got an error when I tried to disable a category. It claimed that the category already existed, which it obviously did. When I looked at the code, I found that it seemed that would every time, since the category will always be found.
2) Would it be possible to have fewer buttons? It's a very "busy" form, but I realize that it's a safety measure to have individual "Delete" buttons. But it's a little unusual to have a separate "Update" button for each item. An idea would be to have three option buttons each, "Enable", "Disable", and "Remove" with an "Update" and "Cancel" (or "Reset") at the bottom of that form section. I also realize that it is currently similar to your quote management page, rather than your plugin config page. It's your call, of course. Just something to think about.
3) Now that I have a mechanism to directly add categories, would it be possible to prevent regular users (not admins) from adding categories dynamically when they add quotes? As an admin, I find it a little uncomfortable to allow Joe User the ability to add a category. After all, they can't add news topics, can they? Of course I can always delete the category, and reassign the quote to a more appropriate one, but that's only after I notice the new category (if I ever do).
3a) Since some admins obviously like and depend on this feature, I'd think it might be best implemented as a config option.
Thanks for listening. This monster is rapidly exhausting all of my ideas to improve it.

I think it would be easier though to just comment the input field in the template file. also, if you have moderation turned on, you would see the category and could edit it before it is submitted--it isn't enabled until it is approved--only if the queue is turned on however.
Here is another idea for you to kick around... I've put an edit link into the quote display that shoots the quote to the manage page for editing. Is there really any use, now, for the search form on the manage page?

So... anonymous users cannot add categories, and logged-in users can add them if the site is configured to allow it? That'd be fine. Or did you have something else in mind...
Well, I agree with you--too many buttons. problem is that each quote uses its own form.. so I'll have to change that up a bit.
Well, it's something to ponder a bit, anyway. One of my occasional tasks at my last job was GUI development. Although it wasn't for web interfaces, it taught me to always ask if there is something simpler and/or more intuitive that could be done. The current interface is intuitive, certainly, but it's not exactly simple. Just think about it, I guess.
I've put an edit link into the quote display that shoots the quote to the manage page for editing. Is there really any use, now, for the search form on the manage page?
Well, that's a good question. There was never any need, per se, since it could have been searched through the site's main search page. However, I thought it was kinda nice to have a directed quote search, more geared to searching the quotes.
The link is displayed only for admins, I assume? The edit link (while useful) really only helps if the random quote comes up for the admin. For everyone else, the problem would need to be reported, then I'd have to search it out to fix it anyway. Besides, for the regular users, I suppose it's kinda nice to be able to search for a quote right near the same page that they would add a quote.
I'd suggest keeping it, although it does add to the weight of the plugin and the amount of code that needs to be maintained.

Machinari,
Couple of gentle suggestions...
1) What do you think about putting the Source Date in parenthesis instead of following a comma? It just seems a bit more "standard" if you know what I mean. See imdb's movie listings, for example. Obviously, I can hack it myself, but I'm talking more about a permanent change.
2) Would it make sense to have the Google link for the Quoted field be disablable within the config screen? About half my quotes are of a personal nature, about half are from movies and books and stuff. It's just kinda weird to have a Google link searching for "Kate" or "Jim".
Just a couple of thoughts...
Have a good weekend thinking about it.

re source date in parentheses: good idea--i didn't bother to research and find out what the standard might look like.
re google link: I agree with you that it will not be universally acceptable. making it configurable may fix it one way, but if half the quotes are still google-able, then what could you do?
hmmm... maybe (and tell me if this is over the top) if I made the ggl link configurable per category, adding that configuration to the category management page... hmmmm... but then what if the quote belonged to a ggl active category at the same time as belonging to one that wasn't? your thoughts? perhaps just on or off is enough.
Hmmm actually do you think we might be drifting into the realms of sub-categories rather than a title field? What are your thoughts?
yes yes, but multiple categories was hard enough, nevermind sub-categories on top of it all.
but the structure of the lookup table should allow the search feature to be modified in such a way to limit by one category (which it does now) and then by another within the first. So you could limit your search by christmas and then by poems, returning only christmas poems. I'll have to look into that.
re the google links. yes, it is easy enough to do a google manually if need be so on/off will suffice.
re the search form on the manage page. It is redundant now, but i'll leave it for the time being. The problem is, i'm testing with 100 plus categories and 1200 plus quotes, if I search for a single and common word, well, it's just a nasty page load
Also, I just wanted to mention again (if I haven't already) how much I appreciate the advice and suggestions from all of you. It is a great help so don't ever be shy or think you might be annoying me.

Fair enough...LOL...your solution sounds like a great idea though. We love to see that feature incorporated if at all possible.
Just as a side note though...we have been prefixing our items within the quotation field with "poem:", "quote:", "lyric:" etc which has been discussed earlier in this topic. Using the current search (with no modifications) we've simply searched the "Christmas" category for the literal term "poem" and...low and behold we get a listing of Christmas poems...duh that was so easy. Exactly what we were wanting to do.
Let me just say again how much we are loving the plugin as it is. We are a fair way into loading our database of quotes now and the more we use it, the more we like it. Any new features now are just icing on the cake really...

but for now... I'm off to play ut2k4 cuz I have tons of work to do..

I'm looking forward to it. I really like these weekly updates, but I wonder how long you can keep it up! You're spoiling us.
1) On the google link: a simple On/Off switch would be fine with me. Any other features you decide to add would be like a tasty gravy.
2) On 1.0.4 version: Did the category management page make it in officially yet? Or is it still in beta?
3) On the search page: Perhaps I misunderstand. Why is it redundant?
Have fun with UT, I'm a Joint Ops guy myself. It's all good.

I had to enter it manually--googlebot is killing me.
anyways, added category management page, a few tweeks here and there, some suggestions applied, some bugs fixed. Didn't get to deal with the ton of buttons on the catman page, but for now it'll do. haven't had time to figure out the forms just yet. it's all fully functional though, as far as i can tell.
An upgrade script is available.
I'm calling it rc1 due to the addition of the cat man page. I'm sure I haven't caught everything yet.
find it here[*4] .
I cleaned up the cat listing on the add and manage forms for you jhackwith.
and shetzel, it isn't the search page that is redundant, but the search form on the manage page--now that all regular listing quotes and search results have an edit link that shoots the quote to the manage page. So once on the manage page with the "clicked on edit" quote there ready for editing, you don't need to use the form on that page.
And i left the google links for now as simply on/off--didn't see jason's suggestion in time. perhaps next week.
Enjoy!

We have upgraded successfully to 1.0.4 without any problem...
LOVE the new edit link. Life is so much easier! Very cool indeed...thankyou thankyou thankyou
One very very tiny issue: on the add page there is no label for the category field? (if you're adding a new category that is...)

Very cool...
just a thought... the source field would then be your title and appear above your quote.
but if you are intent on hitting the code, keep in mind that the quotes are selected in a number of places: functions.inc; index.php; search.php; manage.php; moderate.php. In all those places, the select statements are similar but not exact--your field will have to be represented in all those places. then the display involves setting the variables in the proper functions,, editing the template to reflect those variables... and so on. don't forget about the input--check it for nasty bits. etc.
I'll stick to your method for now. I did the other way and got it working, but it is too much of a pain having to redo all the code changes whenever a new version comes out.
Thanks once again.

OK, I may have a problem with 1.0.4rc1 and the category management....
I did something extreme (which usually finds bugs) and disabled all the categories. I keep getting this one quote (from the "Miscellany" category) that comes up every time. Since I disabled "Miscellany", I would have expected nothingness. When I enabled another small category (2 entries), the random quote generated was one of those three (2 from "Books", or the same one from "Miscellany").
There could be a bug with my quote importation script, but my data looks good. Could someone else try this as described and see what happens?

Second question: Where are the category enable/disable fields kept? I kinda thought it might be in 'gl_dailyquote_category', but I am apparently mistaken. It might help me figure out my next problem.
After I disabled all the categories, I tried to re-enable all of them. For some reason, I can't re-enable the "Miscellany" category. It might be doing it. It gives me a success message. But the catman page redisplays with a button set in the "disable". Weird.
Could someone else try this as described and see what happens?
well, I tried it. I wasn't able to reproduce that oddity. It worked properly for me and after all cats were disabled, there "was nothingness."
Only thing I can think of without actually being able to reproduce the problem, is that the value didn't get set on that category in the table. but that should never happen.
a quick way to see which cats are actually enabled without going into the db is to go to the add quote page. the categories are displayed there with disabled ones greyed over and all others are still bold black. you can check up on the miscellany cat there.
the "Status" field in the quotes table as well as the categories table are for moderation, while it is the "Status" field in the lookup table that is responsible for enabling/disabling categories. that means that a category will only be enabled or disabled if there is a quote belonging to that category (just an aside).
maybe if you can tell me how the miscellany category was created at first??? It isn't created by default, but once it is created (either by you or by the script under certain circumstances), then it functions ever so slightly different then all other categories. eg, not being able to be deleted.
hope some of that helps.. Let me know, K?
on the good side, disabling all cats did show me a problem with the cached quote function. an oversight that continues to show the cached quote though all categories it may belong to are disabled.

Upgraded to 1.0.4, everything is working except for one minor problem:
I'm getting doubled quotes on the main listings page. See
http://www.intotheflame.com/dailyquote/index.php[*5] for an example... I get two of each quote listed.
Thanks again for all your hard work!

change line 100 in index.php from this:
$sql = "SELECT q.ID, Quotes, Quoted, Source, Sourcedate, Date, q.UID";
to this:
$sql = "SELECT DISTINCT q.ID, Quotes, Quoted, Source, Sourcedate, Date, q.UID";
that should do it.. though it shouldn't be happening on that page. that is to say that it isn't happening for me sorry about that oversight. let me know if it doesn't do the trick.

features that will make it into the 1.0.4 final include:
* enable/disable ALL button on the category management page
(inspired by shetzel )
* maybe a delete all button (dangerous i know) on the category management page. would put all quotes to "miscellany."
* replacement of images available for the links row. going to make them like the edit link--clean, simple, editable. will include the psp file.
* batch delete button (according to a checkbox) on the manage page, which means i'll be leaving the search form on that page.
* and I'm going to add the title field (persistence pays off ) to accomodate a wider range of use for this plugin.
* and any bugs that I'm able to track down.
any other minor things that could make it in here?
Limiting the search to within one category does not appear to be working...in our installation anyway...hmmm (Just to clarify I'm running dailyquote 1.0.3 with GL1.3.9sr1.)
I tracked your problem Jill, sorry it took so long.
Apparently I changed a variable name in 1.0.3 (don't remember why).
here is the fix.. change lines 61 and 62 of search.php:
just change $_POST['cat'] on both lines to read $_POST['categ']
works for me, hope it works for you.

blah blah... i'm ticked now! just realized that many code changes (i think) and at the very least the change log for 1.0.3 to 1.0.4 was never saved and so never made it into the 1.0.4 rc.
the problem was power outages 2 weeks ago. just realized it today after changing a couple things here and there that I'm sure I had already dealt with. So I really don't know what all changes i made to the code because some of them just are not there. if you find stuff not working that worked before.. please let me know so I can reapply changes. sorry.

Yep we encountered exactly the same problem and have applied the fixed. No more double entries!

No problem at all. I'm sure you have a life away from this plugin. Thanks for looking into it for us. I have applied the fix and the search is now performing as expected. Very cool....thanks Machinari!!!

Wow...we might just have to join in with MrHyde's celebrations here... We look forward to it with baited breath....
any other minor things that could make it in here?
Well since you're asking (big mistake..lol).....we do have a little tiny suggestion. Since us admins have the ability to use the fabulous new "edit" link which takes us directly to a form to edit an individual quotation...is it possible to improve the display of the editing form for individual quotations? Could the quotation field be changed from a text field to a text box? The current text field makes it quite difficult to edit a long quotation. Most of the darn thing is not actually visible. (We do understand why you've had a text field in the past due to the search producing multiple quotations for editing.) What do you think?
Thanks for all your hard work!
