Hey, y'all,
Just setting up my third GL site, and this time I set up a forum as well.
My client wants to be able to post to the blog portion and have a link to a corresponding discussion on the forum.
Is this possible to do? Any help would be appreciated as usual.

Have them start a corresponding forum thread, grab the url of the thread, paste into the story.

This is the same thing that I was asking recently
here[*1] . It doesn't look too promising I'm afraid - although it's got to be something a lot of people want.
Maybe Dirk can shed some further light on things...

What do you expect me to say?
The idea is neat, sure. But how should this work in practise? You have the story "here" and the comments "over there" in the forum - that would be confusing, don't you think?
I've seen sites that duplicate the story as the first forum post (see
here[*2] for example - no, it's not a Geeklog site). But that would require more code changes to automate this. And what if you edit the story later on (if only to fix typos)?
Articles and comments are tightly integrated. Someone has to come up with a similar concept for integrating articles and forum posts before we can even think about implementing this ...
bye, Dirk

Heh - well I certainly wasn't trying to cause offense!! I was mainly curious about the potential for say the plugin interface to allow the inclusion of some extra code into the article posting process to generate a forum thread.
Having not examined the plugin interfaces I simply don't know what's possible or not as a plugin vs a code hack (the latter being somewhat less desireable). As you say below plenty of other sites do this - and I was curious what the reasons or issues might be as to why this wasn't a GL feature now that the Forum plugin is firmly entrenched.
This isn't a dig in any way - I'm just trying to understand the lie of the land.

In the context of a "blog" perhaps it could be confusing. But in the context of something that is more of a content management system I'd suggest a cleaner separation between say a large article and the discussion about it would (could?) be better by hosting the discussion in the forum.

Yes - that would be an issue - not is not an aspect I'd considered. That's exactly the sort of feedback I ws hoping for!

So it seems the main issues are handling the story text in the forum thread (or not) and the question of how the linkage is established from an interface/code perspective on the article creation page?
Thanks very much for the feedback - it's greatly appreciated, and Dirk I have the greatest admiration for all the work and support you do with GL.
My own GL site has just hit 3 million hits and keeps on trucking never missing a beat.
