Hi,
When a users at my site create a new topic the permissions tick box's have both members and ananymous ticked by default, how can this be changed.

seems to me that at the time a topic is being created, the boxes to which you refer are on the same page and can just be unchecked.
only two mouse clicks
perhaps i am misunderstanding what you intend

You are right, but my site is for logged in users only and some of my users are daft and forget to un-tick the box's.
Anyway, i found this hack but do not know what scripts it referes to.

because you are concerned with the topic, search for the phrase mentioned in the hack within the admin/topic.php file.
and change "perm anon" and/or "perm members" accordingly. I would leave the rest alone.

On a side note: If your users are "daft" (your words, not mine ...) then maybe you shouldn't give them Admin access in the first place ...
