I just wanted to leave some simple feedback, and ask for recommendations at the same time.
I have been trying out various CMS/Blogging systems for a while. I've tried phpNuke, PostNuke, e107 and a few others. I've had problems with some, and been frustrated by others, but when I installed GeekLog, I was sure fairly quickly I would stick with it!
It has most if not all of the features I want, although its not be as easy as I'd like to figure out a couple of sections so far, and any help and advice would be warmly received.
On the base setup I have, I'd like to add a picture gallery, and some forums. I've had a peek through the downloads, but not spotted a clear answer yet to either. If anyone can recommend the right solutions for these I'd be happy. I've used Coppermine in the past and like that, but am open to new ideas. I've used invision and phpbb and liked both in different ways, but again I'm open to suggestions.
Are there any other plug-ins that are seen as "must have's?" I have added http_referrer, mycal and thingstodo so far. I'm keen to try out anything else useful too.
Hopefully I'll hear from some of you soon! Thanks for a great product!

Just to update this a little. I have found (I think) the forum block and have downloaded it ready to install this evening. (Hate being at work they stop me doing anything fun)
I also downloaded a file management block(?) Would this let me modify files and upload them from work? I'd like to be able to edit the .php and .html files and upload and download, but I am not able to use ftp.
I haven't found a photo gallery, but have seen a Gallery Block that links I presume to a package, where would I find that as its not in the downloads that I can see!
Thanks

First lets fix your terminology. Plugins extend the functionality of Geeklog. There is a plugin for Geeklog to implement forums (get latest from http://www.portalparts.com). There is also a 'hack' that integrates Gallery into Geeklog. I call it a 'hack' because it doesn't implement the plugin API but, I do use it myself and it works quite well.
Blocks, on the other hand, are the widgets you see typically on the left and right hand side of Geeklog pages. Some plugins include blocks of their own, some you can create yourself.

here[*1] . It allows you to modify your config stuff and upload files thru your browser without ftp.

The forum plugin is a total must. It sure beats the hell out of going with the vastly overrated phpBB, especially when Blaine has put so much into this very feature-rich tool.
To sum it all up, I guess, is that all the "must-have" plugins are at
PortalParts[*2] . Happy Geeklogging.

Thanks, sorry my post was unclear, I think I understood in my mind but didn't express it well enough. I've got most of it sorted now, bar a little problem with the Gallery, but I think that will just take a little more reading!

This was pretty much exactly what I needed! Thanks for the pointer. Work is a pain, but I do understand why they have the protection they have, but this lets me do a lot more with my time here. Lucky I don't have a "real" job where you have to work! hehe Thanks again!

Thanks for the pointer, I find its always easier to ask for some information on the best addons, because they always exist, but don't always stand out. Now I have some more bit to play with on my system, which although its "live" really needs a lot more content.
