I installed GL and I see it and all, but when I try to login as admin in the /admin section, no luck. Any ideas?

I should mention that I have read several other threads on this and checked all the items mentioned, I also read the faq on logging in, cleared my cookies and what not, I would post the url here for someone to look at, but I don't know what the rules are on posting url's.
Anyone?

From your post i think you're thinking phpNuke were there is a user login and an admin login.
In GL there is only the user login which gets you the admin panel if you have permissions. If you did everything right after you install there should be a user account with:
user: admin
Password: Password
Just login and change the admin and password to your username and password and delete the olther default users or change them as you changed the admin user.
If you already wen't trough here just login with your regular admin account.
if you forgot the pass then delete the database and install again.

The problem is that I cannot login to the admin area of my geeklog install. I am using admin & password as the username and password. When I enter the username and password, I see a stopsign for a second and then I am returned to the login screen. If I type any other username/pw combo I get a message saying 'incorrect login', but using user:admin pw:password I do not get this message, nor do I get logged in.

Check the acess log, it records failed logins and also check the error log. That might give us a better idea of the problem.
I assume you've done everything in the faqs. Maybe is a miss configuration on your GL config. Edit a new config from scratch just to be safe, maybe it is something so simple you can't see. Be carefull with the paths, expecially if you changed a folder name/place. If your host gives you a subdomain try using that instead of your domain on the config. Just try different configurations.
Have you checked your browser settings (is it alowing cookies?) Just be sure.
I don't know what else to tell you... Maybe someone else will have more ideas.

I'm having this same exact problem, too. Went through all the FAQs, redid the config.php file. I checked my access.log and error.log, and they both still said *** dummy entry ***. So I logged in with a bad username/password, and the error log reported the error.
But I can't log in, either. Get the same thing you do - the stop sign, then it tells you to log in. I had another guy in another location test this (he runs other Geeklog servers) and he's unable to log in, either.

i've checked my cookies - it clearly isn't writing them for my geeklog site. however, the cookie from this forum is in my cookies file.

I am experiencing the same issue. I have multiple geeklog installations on different servers without any problems.
Several clean installs with same issue, no permission errors, no whitespaces, cookies are set, deleted existing cookies on local machine and have reviewed the login issue FAQ. Open index.php, who's online shows "Guest Users: 1". Type in Admin or admin, enter default password, screen refreshes to the same login screen again. The who's online now shows "Admin" and "Guest Users: 1".
While testing, I installed geeklog v1.3.9 and v1.3.9sr1 (exact same procedures) on a different domain on the same server. Results? no problems logging in. I'll continue testing since this seems to be a recurring issue.

Ive notice that I have to use my 24.XXX.XXX.XXX ip to login, and cannot use my domain name. I can type my domain name into the adrress bar, see my site as anon user. Then when i go to login it simply refreshes. If I go to my site via the numerical IP, everyting works fine.
I am thinking it may have something to do with Gallery. I recall it saying you had to use the same url to admin it every time. Since the new Gallery can be embedded, I think that may be it, but havnt had time or desire to look into it as of yet.
You all have the embedded gallery installed too?
*edit* logging in works fine with both IPs via Mozilla. So much for my previous idea.

I was having the same problems mentioned above. I had a clean install, no errors and everthing else. Was testing the nightly build 1.3.10 (i think) on os x. When I tried to log in under the Safari browser I was not able to get the Admin or Moderator menus, also would not get a cookie written.
Tried the same thing in Mozilla and worked it all worked like it should.

Hey,
I have the same problem with the login.
Everything was installed, and I could see that the Admin existed.
But I never had to give a password for my admin.
so I simply don't know the password.
does anybody know how I could fix this??
Thanks

I still can´t log in with OPERA, will probably be a cookie issue.
It didn´t work with MIE until I specified IP number in
config.php
$_CONF['cookiedomain'] = '10.0.0.xxx';
(as I have a LAN)
I am still having problems though, I cannot change theme,
will keep reading the FAQ

I couldn't log-in to my new install. I thought it was a cookie or a whitespace problem.
It turned out to be that I was using PHP 5 and needed to do:
Make sure you have register_long_arrays = On in your php.ini.
For compatibility with old versions of PHP 4, Geeklog relies on the "old-style" input arrays, $HTTP_POST_VARS and $HTTP_GET_VARS.
Don't forget to switch register_global = On
while you are in that file.
That solved the "can't login" problem I was having.

Yup, that's worked for me! At last, after days of trawling for help on this problem, I can finally login as admin
With me, the single line that fixed it was to set:
register_long_arrays = On
in php.ini. I'm using PHP 5. Thanks webb_k - much obliged

in your config.php, did you use the IP address URL as the $_CONF['site_url']

edit your php.ini file (if you're using php 5) and change "register_long_arrays" to "on"
