Out of curiosity, are you using netscape as your browser? Also, what are your cookie settings? I have seen this behavior when cookies are set up improperly in the browser. Basicly what happens then, is that which you press 'log in' it seems to log you in as a user, but it cannot create the cookie in your browser that is required for geeklog to match your browser to the session it just created for you.
Make sure you are blocking cookies. Now, back to my first question, are you using netscape? I've had trouble getting netscape configured for one of my users. No matter what settings I set his cookies to, it seems that he can't log in.

There's an FAQ entry on login problems - please check that first.

If you set $_CONF['site_url'] = 'http://localhost'; you won't need to set the cookiedomain at all (as Geeklog will do it for you). That's what I'm using for my local setup.
