I have just completed an article of about 3000 words on implementing a Wysiswyg editor for my Geeklog site. The editor is based on the htmlArea engine. Quoting from the intro:
This article describes the hack to the editing functions for this
geeklog site. There are a number of basic changes we
made. Two of the more noticeable are
- If you use MSIE 5.5 or higher on Windows, you have a Wysiwyg editor
- The layout of the editing page has changed to, what was for us is, a
more functional format and flow
In addition to these major visible changes, there are some other ones which
we will discuss below.

htmlarea is greatly improved if you also get the phpuploadmanager addon to it. This allows you to click the 'insert picture' button and get a dialog box that allows you to specify local or remote files.
