Anyone else besides me intrested in caching geeklog db queries in order to increase speed? Dont get me wrong, I think GL rocks, but it is extreamly process intensive. Taking 3-5 seconds to create a page, even on the main geeklog site. (I have tried a Duel Pentuim 4, running RH linux, 8,0 with custom compiled apache+php) with 1 Gig of Mem , scsi hard drive and still get results that average out at 3.4 seconds.
Anyone use or have tried a caching engine?

Are your tables indexed?

Make sure you have all your indexes set up properly. I have a GL site (www.macfixit.com) with a user list of 120k+ and almost 10k articles that produces pages in .5 - 1 second.
System is a dual 1g p3 with 1g ram. The biggest delay in page load that I have found is the user Authentication stuff that happens at the top of the pages.

I agree. Check your table indexing first because if it's not set up right that will slow you down big time.
The other thing I did, which probably will make Dirk cringe, is remove all the excess indenting spaces in templates. Those aren't needed in displaying your pages. By doing this, my webpages are about 50% lighter.

Another thing to try is have a cronjob hit your page every 1/2 hr or so, this keeps any time based pages (weather, qotd ,etc) updated in a timely basis...
I have also had good luck with the PHPAccelerator http://www.php-accelerator.co.uk/

Macfixit loaded the main page in like 10 sec, but the forum loaded really quick.

I just installed the PHP Accelerator for a short while on my GL server, and was impressed with it. Shaved quite a few hundreths of a second off my generation times.
Only problem I found was I got a weird SQL syntax error 1064 when viewing my Andromeda[*1] MP3 script, which is wrapped in GL. So I disabled the Accelerator for now.
