IRC Chat Block provides the capability to embed and host an IRC chat room inside a Geeklog site. A visitor's browser must have the Java plugin in order to use the jIRC client software. If this feature is disabled, the visitor can still enter the room using one of the readily available downloadable client softwares.

Looks great! How about a block that displays all the registered users that are in the chat room? Is this possible or even practical?

I think it's possible. I'll take a look at how it can be done, but it will only be for those who enter via your site. The applet doesn't output a list of users in the room as a parameter for other programs to use. Even if it did, I think it would be hard to determine if those entering using other client software are actually registered users or just happened to pick nicknames the same as those who are. Unless of course, you want to set up and run your own IRC server. ;o)

you can download jirc from jpilot.com and put the code in a static page. I find this is a bit better then relying on a different host for your chatrooms.. One could even create a block where you can enter the nickname in and press "chat" and have it redirect to the static page and enter the chatroom automatically...---the c0w says: m00

Yes, that is an alternative. It should be mentioned though that jIRC is shareware not freeware. The download copy is for evaluation purposes only. Anyone using it regularly on his site is asked to register it. The cost is $49.99 per domain name. The applet comes with a nagware posting "unregistered copy" in the screen during sessions until a registration key is entered.
Also, the default static page plugin which comes with GL does not implement its security model. A person would need to download Tom W's plugin for this until GL's next release.
This block was only meant as an easy way to install an IRC chat at no cost and without messing with a bunch of java files.
