What is CVS? What is it for? What does it do? How is it used?
It's everywhere and since I moved to linux it's even more places.
Can anyone inform me?

CVS is a source code control system, one of many similar products (e.g. RCS, SCCS, SourceSafe, ...). It helps managing source code so that you can keep track of changes and it also helps when several people work on the same project. The CVS homepage[*1] has more information.
The CVS for Geeklog[*2] has now moved to our own server - the old CVS on SourceForge is not updated any more.

Dirk,
How stable is the code in GL's CVS? In another open source project I use theirs is usually very buggy so it's not worth downloading until they've declared a new release.

We usually try to keep CVS in a working state. Of course, you should not use code from CVS on a production site - at least not unless you know exactly what you're doing. Anyone wanting to play with CVS code should read the geeklog-devtalk list to be informed about areas we're working on or where problems may exist.
The bad news is that anonymous CVS checkout doesn't work at the moment :-( You will have to use the web interface until that's fixed.

How soon do you expect the anonymous CVS access to be available on the new Geeklog CVS server? I ask because I'm using CVS to maintain a local "sandbox" version of Geeklog that has my personal changes implemented. I would like to be able to "update" this sandbox with the sr1 version of 1.3.7 in order to get the security fixes you've implemented, but I'll do it manually if anonymous access won't be restored soon.

I'll try and fix anonymous access this week. I'm having problems with RedHat related setup issues.---The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.
